Living in Punta Gorda, Florida: A Local Neighborhood Guide
Punta Gorda sits on the south bank of the Peace River, where the river opens into Charlotte Harbor. It is the kind of town where you park once and walk: a historic downtown, parks along the water, and a harbor that is part of nearly every view. It is also one of the places I take boaters first. This guide covers what you need to know before you buy here, from the waterfront to the questions I make sure every buyer asks.

Where Punta Gorda Is
Punta Gorda is the county seat of Charlotte County and the only incorporated city in the county, so it has its own city government, its own permits and its own rules. It became a city in 1887. US 41 crosses the Peace River here on two bridges, with Port Charlotte on the north side, and Interstate 75 runs along the east side of town. Punta Gorda Airport is just east of the interstate and has commercial flights. One thing to know up front: Punta Gorda is a harbor town, not a beach town. The Gulf beaches are a drive, or a boat ride.
The Waterfront
The Harborwalk: a waterfront path for walking and biking that runs about two and a half miles along the harbor, ending at Fishermen's Village.
Laishley Park: on the river next to downtown, with a marina and a public boat launch.
Gilchrist Park: along the Harborwalk between downtown and Fishermen's Village, with wide harbor views.
Fishermen's Village: shops, restaurants and a marina built out over the harbor at the west end of the Harborwalk.
Ponce de Leon Park: at the west end of town on Charlotte Harbor, with a public boat ramp and trailer parking. It is a favorite spot for sunset.

Boating
Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles were built around saltwater canals that lead to Charlotte Harbor and on to the Gulf. Many of those canals have no fixed bridges on the way out, which is what local listings mean by "sailboat access." In both neighborhoods the City of Punta Gorda maintains the seawalls, and owners pay the city a yearly assessment for that work. How long it takes to reach open water changes a great deal from one street to the next, so I check the route for every waterfront home.

Public Boat Ramps
Laishley Park Municipal Marina, 120 Laishley Court: the city's public boat launch on the Peace River, next to downtown.
Ponce de Leon Park, 3400 Ponce de Leon Parkway: the city's public ramp on Charlotte Harbor, with trailer parking.
Darst Park, 537 Darst Avenue: a Charlotte County ramp.
Harbour Heights Park, 27420 Voyageur Drive: a Charlotte County ramp.
For the two city ramps, see the City of Punta Gorda boating page. Ramps and piers close for repairs from time to time, so check the Charlotte County facilities status page before you hook up the trailer.

What to Know Before You Buy
Punta Gorda took a direct hit from Hurricane Charley in 2004 and was hit again by Hurricane Ian in 2022. In 2024, storm surge from Hurricane Helene and then Hurricane Milton put water into low-lying streets near the harbor. The town rebuilt each time. It does mean the right questions matter. Before you make an offer, I walk you through:
The flood zone and the elevation of the home
Whether the home had water in it in 2022 or 2024, and what was repaired and permitted
The age of the roof
Insurance quotes for wind and flood, before you are under contract
Whether the home is inside the city limits or in the county, and what that means for taxes, utilities and permits
For boat owners: bridges, water depth, the condition of the seawall, and how long it takes to reach the harbor
I would rather you hear all of this from me up front than be surprised at the closing table.
